Strata pressure, i. e. pressure through overlaying rock strata has to be taken into account in underground mining. By means of special methods, the magnitude of rock pressure can be calculated in advance.

Mining activities can cause movements on the ground surface and, thus, mining damages, e. g. to buildings. Minerals and mine surveyors are able to pre-calcu-late such movements for minimising or preventing damages.
